Windows Vista and later allow a new Service PRESHUTDOWN notification, which gives the service extra time to complete its shutdown. This can help to avoid a lengthy auto-recovery if the server has too many cache pages to flush within the SHUTDOWN limit.
An option has been added to the ctntinst utility to set the timeout. To set the timeout:
ctntinst -setpsdtimeout <TIMEOUT_IN_SECONDS> <SERVICE_NAME>
To view the timeout setting:
ctntinst -showconfig <SERVICE_NAME>
Note: The ctntinst tool is no longer included with FairCom Server as of V10.3. It is recommended to use the standard Windows sc.exe command, which is more compatible than this utility.
